How long does it take to become fluent in English?
Short answer: according to Cambridge English, it takes approximately 200 guided learning hours (lessons and supervised study) to move up one CEFR level, for example from B1 to B2. With 8 lessons a month and 4 hours of guided study a week, that is about 25 hours a month, or roughly 8 months per level. Your real pace depends on your starting point, your study intensity and your exposure to English outside lessons.

How long it takes with 4 or 8 lessons a month

Calculation: lesson hours per month + weekly study hours × 4.33 weeks; 200 hours ÷ hours per month. A planning estimate, not a guaranteed result.
What speeds it up (or slows it down)
Cambridge English lists four factors that change this time:
- Language learning background: people who already speak other languages or are already B1/B2 progress differently from complete beginners
- Intensity: a little every day beats one long session a week
- Age
- Study and exposure outside lessons: meetings, reading, series and podcasts in English all count

How many hours does it take to go from B1 to B2?
About 200 guided learning hours, according to Cambridge English: B1 sits at around 350–400 cumulative hours and B2 at around 500–600.
Can I become fluent in English in 3 months?
Moving up a full CEFR level in 3 months is rare: 200 hours in 3 months would mean about 15 hours of study a week. Three months of focused practice can, however, build real confidence for specific situations, such as a presentation or an interview.
Do private lessons shorten this time?
Private lessons concentrate the time on you: more speaking minutes and correction of your own mistakes. Total hours still matter; what changes is how much you get out of each hour.
